Makeshift Marden

It took them three days to get from the border of Childhood to the Cravat Mountains on the backs of the toves. A ride that was filled with tension and arguments.

Mal rode with Eagy for the first day. He clung to her like she might disappear. When he wasn’t adamantly telling her and Wally he would not let Mal do something in particular, he had his face buried in her neck listening as Wally continued to walk them through it.

The second day, she rode with Chesh. He kept his hands locked with hers, laced into the mane of his tove. He mostly stayed with Wyat, though he remained close enough to Eagy and Wally that he could make a statement every once in a while. Otherwise, he continued to rub his cheek against her or his nose through her hair.

The third day, she rode with Ryph. Ryph never spoke a word. He didn’t smile or look away from the not-there-path they traveled. After a good part of the morning, in which she tried to engage him in conversation and he’d only answer with a nod or shake of his head, she sat with him quietly. The entire day, he remained locked around her. More often than not, he was shaking.

They arrived at the inn late in the evening. Mal still made a point of visiting Cylan and making sure he’d been treated well and had eaten decently. He was fine, he assured her, but pleased to have his companions back. “Dull around here,” he told her.

The morning after their arrival, Wally had them pulled out of bed early. “Let’s go. Up,” he said, pulling on arms and legs.

There were many grumbles and growls from the lot of animals.

“We don’t have time for your whining,” Wally informed them. “Our days are numbered.”

That seemed to be the dampening agent the group needed to be coaxed out of bed. Slowly, at a snail’s pace, they got up and dressed before Wally led them downstairs for a light breakfast.

“I need more than a corncake,” Wyat said, frowning at the little chunk that sat like a quarter in the palm of his hand.

Wally added two more and gave him a grin before turning away.

“Sarcasm does not become you,” Wyat said, popping all three corncakes in his mouth like candy.

Mal hid her giggle behind her teacup.

Then, they were outside. The inn had a side yard that was decent size. The toves wandered over to watch as Wally stood among a variety of items that Mal did not recognize.

“Every day, we’re going to be working with these new weapons for quite some time. Having just commissioned them, I’m going to be learning with you, but it should be straightforward if the Wyte Knight was able to follow my thoughts. He seemed competent.” He eyed the closest thing for a moment, as if having second thoughts on his confidence in the matter. After a subtle shake of his head, he looked back up at the lot of them.
